Mission

Create wireframes for a Proof-of-Concept (POC) for a tvOS app that showcases the first time setup and selection of a playlist for our clients; a digital marketing firm who specializes in creating and displaying TV playlists.

Discovery + Research

Our client was interested in breaking into a new market for their product, churches. I drafted two provisional personas based on the client's input and educated knowledge of that market.

Sam, Senior Pastor of a Mega Church

Joshua, the paid techie at Sam’s church

I have to set up 10 TVs individually every Sunday morning and there are so many logistics that could go wrong on each TV, it can be stressful! I need to be able to set the playlist and forget about it so I can concentrate on my other tasks.
— Joshua Hayes

Mini pivot. Based on interviews with the client and SME, I quickly realized that while Sam would be a sales target, he was certainly not the user of the TV app.

Joshua would be the primary persona as he works full time on the church's technology team and is responsible for uploading content, downloading updates, and making sure that the TVs are set up for every event in the church space.

User Flow

Understanding the logistical issues that Joshua faced and the time-sensitive nature of setting up playlists for events, I created an ideal user flow to guide my process. His task: Log in and set up the tvOS app for the first time and then select a playlist to play on the TV.

I also worked with my development team lead to verify that this user flow was accurate for setting up the POC and made sure that he was able to start setting up the backend in spite of tight time constraints.

Design Process

Wirefames

This was my first design project for tvOS. When I started the official pen to paper design process, I performed research and read Apple's Human Interface Guidelines for Apple TV to understand the design requirements and standard design themes used for this application. Designing for a group of people watching a TV and using a remote is a markedly different and an intentionally passive experience.

Clickable Prototype

Using Craft Prototyping with Invision, I first validated the clickable prototype internally with 3 guerrilla usability tests to verify the functionality based on developmental constraints. After that, I presented the POC prototype to the client to validate that this workflow met their goals.

Results

The Proof-of-Concept was a success! We met our client's needs and we identified additional functionality that was necessary to include in the future MVP. The clickable prototype allowed them to visualize the next step in this process and we won the contract to build out the MVP!
